Why Every Traveler Falls in Love with Goa (And You Will Too!)

Falling in love with Goa isn’t some cheesy cliché, it’s legit what happens to pretty much everyone who goes there, including my skeptical ass. I’m sitting here in my freezing apartment in Chicago right now, January gray skies pressing down, sipping crappy instant coffee, and all I can think about is that warm Arabian Sea breeze hitting my face back in 2019. Seriously, I went there thinking it’d be just another beach spot—overhyped, touristy, whatever—but nope, Goa got under my skin quick. Like, embarrassingly quick.

Why Falling in Love with Goa Starts with the Beaches (Duh, But Hear Me Out)

The beaches in Goa are really what make you fall in love with the place. I went to North Goa. I thought it would be really crowded and crazy.. Then I found this nice quiet beach near Anjuna. The waves were coming in right. The sand was golden. It was warm but not so hot that it hurt my feet. I sat down on the beach with a Kingfisher beer. I watched the sunset. It was so beautiful. I thought to myself the beaches in Goa are even better than they look in pictures. The beaches, in Goa are really special. But here’s the raw honesty: I got sunburned so bad on day two that I looked like a lobster, couldn’t sleep, and whined like a baby. Still loved it. The beaches have this mix of chill and energy—yoga folks at dawn, parties at night—that just pulls you in.

Slightly unusual angle: low and intimate, as if snapped on my old phone. Descriptive alt text: “My lazy afternoon view while falling in love with Goa on Palolem Beach—cows included.”

The Food Scene That Made Me Question My Life Choices Back Home

Part of falling in love with Goa is straight-up the food, man. I ate more seafood in two weeks than in my whole Midwest life. Fresh prawns grilled with that spicy recheado masala, fish curry rice that was so good I went back to the same shack three nights in a row. But real talk—I once ordered “vindaloo” thinking I could handle spice, ended up chugging lassi and crying into my napkin while the waiter laughed kindly. Embarrassing? Yeah. Regrets? Zero. And the breakfasts—poi bread with chorizo, or those fluffy bebinca layers for dessert. Now I’m back in the US craving it while eating sad takeout.

Pro tip from my mistakes: Don’t skip the local shacks over fancy restaurants. Places like Britto’s in Baga or those hidden spots in South Goa are where the magic happens. Check out this guide on authentic Goan cuisine for more inspo.

Hidden Spots and Nightlife: Where Falling in Love with Goa Gets Real

Everyone talks beaches, but the hidden coves and nightlife are what make falling in love with Goa stick forever. I rented a scooter (pro tip: get insurance, I almost ate it on a cow) and found this tiny beach called Cola—turquoise lagoon, almost no people, felt like my secret. Sat there alone, waves crashing, thinking about quitting my job. Kinda dramatic, but Goa does that to you.

Then nights: Anjuna flea market lit up, bargaining for junk I didn’t need, trance parties that went till sunrise. I partied too hard one night, woke up on the beach with sand everywhere—gross, but hilarious in hindsight. South Goa is quieter if you’re not into rave scene, more like me now in my 30s.

For quieter escapes, check Palolem or Agonda.
