Why Staying by the River Is the Perfect Escape You Didn’t Know You Needed

Staying by the river kinda snuck up on me as this thing I do now when everything else feels pointless. I’m holed up in my apartment in the Midwest on this freezing January day, scrolling through old photos from last fall, and yeah, most of them are just blurry shots of water and trees because that’s where I kept ending up. No fancy trips or anything – just driving twenty minutes to this random spot on the river near me, throwing down a blanket, and staying. Like, actually staying for hours until my butt went numb.

Why Staying by the River Feels So Damn Good (At Least for Me)

I’m not gonna pretend I’m some nature expert or whatever. I still doomscroll Twitter half the time and freak out over dumb adult stuff like bills and awkward texts. But staying by the river? It’s the one place where my brain finally shuts up a little. I read about this “Blue Mind” thing once – some book by a guy named Wallace Nichols talking about how water basically hacks your stress levels and makes you feel less insane. Here’s the book if you’re curious. Didn’t think much of it until I tried it myself and realized, oh crap, he’s onto something.

There was this one day in September that was straight-up pathetic. I’d had a fight with my sister over something stupid, work was piling up, and I just drove out there with zero plan. Ended up staying by the river crying over dumb stuff for like an hour, then eating cold fries from a fast-food bag, then somehow feeling… better? The water just kept moving, birds were doing their thing, and nobody was expecting anything from me. Felt ridiculous at the time, but honestly it worked better than any therapy session I’ve paid for.

Stuff I’ve Figured Out About Staying by the River (The Hard Way)

Don’t overcomplicate it – that’s my main advice after screwing it up plenty:

  • Find a spot that’s close enough you won’t talk yourself out of going. Mine’s literally off a side road with sketchy parking, but it works.
  • Bring coffee or something warm, especially if you’re dumb like me and go when it’s chilly. I spilled an entire thermos once and just sat there with wet jeans – 0/10 do not recommend.
  • Don’t force yourself to “meditate” or whatever. Just zone out. Watch sticks float by. It’s fine if your mind wanders to grocery lists.
  • Solo trips first. I tried bringing a friend once and we just ended up complaining the whole time – defeated the purpose.

Some spots get buggy as hell in summer, and yeah, there’s occasionally trash or weird people walking dogs. But even that feels real, y’know? Better than pretending everything’s perfect.

Yeah, Staying by the River Isn’t Always Perfect (Shocker)

Keeping it real – sometimes it’s boring. Or cold. Or you realize you forgot sunscreen and end up looking like a lobster. One time I got so into just sitting there I missed a work call and had to make up some excuse. And seeing plastic bags floating by kinda kills the vibe and reminds you the world’s a mess. But weirdly, even those parts make me appreciate it more? Like, it’s not some influencer retreat, it’s just a free spot to breathe.

There’s actual research saying rivers specifically can be extra good for your head because of the sound and movement – better than just sitting in a park sometimes. This piece talks more about it. Cool to know my lazy habit has science backing it up.

Anyway, That’s My Ramble on Staying by the River

If you’re feeling fried like most of us do these days, just try staying by the river sometime. Nearest one you can find, no excuses about it needing to be scenic or whatever. It’s helped me more than I expected, even when I show up in a bad mood or forget half my stuff. Next nice(ish) day, skip the usual routine and go sit by some water instead. Worst case, you waste an afternoon – best case, you figure out why I’ve been obsessed with it.
