Passengers routinely make a connection while their suitcase does not. The gap exists because a bag travels through a separate system with its own timings, and that system is less forgiving than the terminal above it.

The tag is the whole instruction set

When a bag is checked, the printed tag carries a barcode encoding the flight, the destination and the passenger record. Nothing else follows the bag through the building.

Sorting machinery reads that code at each junction and diverts the bag towards a chute assigned to a departing flight. Human handlers intervene only when a read fails.

A damaged or obscured tag drops the bag out of the automated flow and into a manual queue, which is where most delays are introduced rather than in the flying itself.

Loading starts long before boarding does

Holds are loaded well ahead of the cabin, because containers must be positioned, weighed and recorded before the aircraft's balance figures can be finalised.

That means the practical cutoff for a bag joining a flight arrives earlier than the passenger's own gate deadline. The two clocks are not the same clock.

A traveller who reaches the gate as it closes has still made the flight. A bag arriving at the same moment has missed a door that shut some time earlier.

Minimum connection times are built around luggage

Airports publish a minimum connection time for each pairing of terminals, and the figure is set by whichever element is slowest. Usually that element is baggage transfer.

The calculation covers unloading, the ride through the sorting system, the transfer between piers and the reloading of a container on the far side.

Itineraries sold at or near that minimum are technically legal but carry no slack. Any upstream delay consumes the buffer that the bag, rather than the passenger, needed.

Why a short connection strands luggage

When an inbound flight lands late, ground crews prioritise getting the aircraft turned around and passengers moved. Transfer bags compete for handlers with departing flights already under pressure.

A bag that misses its slot is not lost; it simply falls to the next available service on the same route, which may be hours or a day later.

This is why the pattern is so consistent. Bags go astray on tight connections and in bad weather, and rarely on long layovers in calm conditions.

What happens once a bag is behind

Each tag remains scannable, so the bag's last known position is recorded. Tracing is a matter of matching that record to the passenger file and forwarding the item.

Delivery is then handled by contracted couriers at the destination, which adds another handover and explains why reunion often takes longer than the flight that caused the separation.

Carrying a change of clothes in the cabin is not superstition. It reflects the fact that the two systems run on different schedules and occasionally diverge.
