Two beaches facing the same ocean on the same day can produce completely different waves. The difference is the shape of the sea floor rather than the swell arriving at it.
A wave breaks when the bottom interferes with it
Deep-water swell moves energy through the water without moving the water far. As depth decreases to roughly half the wave's length, the bottom begins to slow the base of the wave.
The crest continues at speed while the base is retarded, so the wave steepens until it can no longer support its own face and breaks. The bottom, not the wind, decides where.
This is why the same swell breaks far offshore on a shallow bank and only at the sand's edge on a steep beach.
Bottom shape decides how the wave breaks
A gradual slope drains energy slowly and produces a crumbling wave that breaks over a long distance. A steep or abrupt rise makes the wave stand up and pitch forward quickly.
A break that peels along a shoreline requires the depth to decrease progressively along the wave's length, so the breaking point travels sideways rather than the whole wave collapsing at once.
Reefs and rock points hold that geometry permanently, which is why such breaks are consistent year after year while sand-bottom beaches are not.
Refraction bends waves toward headlands
Because the shallow part of a wave slows, a wave approaching at an angle bends toward shallower water. Energy concentrates on headlands and spreads out in bays.
That focusing explains why a point can be substantially larger than the beach beside it on the same day, and why sheltered bays stay calm in a big swell.
Sandbars move, so beach breaks change
Sand bottoms are rearranged by every storm and by the ordinary movement of sediment along the shore. A bank that produced good waves one season may be gone the next.
This also means conditions at a beach break vary with the tide, since the same bar is a different depth at high and low water.
Why this matters for safety, not just for surfing
The same bottom features that produce waves also organize the water returning seaward, which is how rip currents form in gaps between bars and alongside structures.
Reading a beach from shore takes practice, and the reliable approach for any visitor is to swim near lifeguards and follow the posted flag conditions and official beach guidance.
